Green Magazine Question

Just a small dilemma that I hope my few readers can help me with. I really am trying to be greener in my habits. However, I subscribe to a couple of magazines (and assuming our financial situation improves, hope to subscribe to a couple more in the near future) and they obviously use up a lot of paper (I do try to recycle these magazines when I'm done with them). Some of these magazines have the option to receive only an online copy. The only problem is, I don't like sitting in front of my computer monitor to read all of my media--sometimes a good book or magazine that can accompany me to the couch is great. I could print off the magazine if I wanted to, but there we are back at the too much paper option. What do you guys do? Does anyone know about the impact of magazines and other paper media on the environment? How do you deal with the issue of staring at a monitor for long periods (which if I'm not mistaken, can be minimally unhealthy)? Anyway, ideas please.

I have absolutely no clue... I am in the same dilemma.
you should drop a line to Artemis over at fMh... she seems to be on top of all the green ways to do things.

Flat-screen monitors are easier on the eyes, but that doesn't solve the curling-up-on-the-couch-with-a-good-magazine problem. Maybe you could only print out the pages that you feel like reading on the couch.

I'm not helpful.

Thanks guys. No worries madhousewife. And thanks for stopping by. I don't really know what to do either. I think G is right, I should drop Artemis a line.

You could just decide if they actually create change in your life or if they are the feel good factor type ( which might also be important, depending on how you feel). I can eliminate two or three that I would like to sub to by the fact that I can't do anything with the great advice in there atm. ie: do I have any money to buy land and build an eco home? NO!?! sigh. nevermind. lol. but it does cut out anything like that for a read .))

Also, some are 'go back to' mags - you can re read infinitely!
Others are the equivalent of what's currently in fashion in the eco world. The latter are ones I can do without. They are the ones that are just materialism with a different face. Doesn't make green for me if the ideas themselves are not sustainable.

Hey, Lessie, here's what I have heard and try to do. You can generally donate mags to doctor's offices, medical centers, hospitals, etc, for their waiting rooms. You can also give them to schools for use in art classes (they're often used for collages, ideas, etc). Maybe a friend might want back issues. If all else fails, magazines aren't too hard to recycle.
